Lift height is the spec that matters most
Shocks are matched to suspension travel. A shock built for 0 to 1.5 inches of lift will not work correctly on a 2 to 3 inch lift. It tops out, limits droop and wears out early. If your JL is lifted beyond 1.5 inches, you need the longer version of this shock, not this one.
Diagnosing a worn shock
Chrysler TSB 02-002-25 notes that light fluid misting on a shock body is normal and not by itself a reason to replace. What warrants replacement is wet streaking, running fluid, or a shock that no longer controls bounce after a bump.
Factory JL shocks are a known weak point, and many owners report fading damping and leaks well before the Jeep feels old.
Replace in pairs. A new shock on one side and a worn one on the other gives uneven damping and unpredictable handling.
Before ordering, confirm your trim. Factory shock part numbers differ between Sport, Sahara and Rubicon.
