The sponge in the outlet does two jobs. It blocks debris and it stabilizes turbulence, which is what gives you a smooth sheet of water across the full 12 inch weir instead of a broken, splashy flow.
Sizing: suits small to medium ponds. For ponds over 3,000 gallons, add a separate external filter. The pump must sit within 9 vertical feet of the spillway.
Installation: the spillway is designed to be set into a berm, retaining wall or slope at the head of the waterfall so only the weir lip shows. Plan the placement before you dig.
Electrical: this is a submersible pump in standing water. Plug it into a GFCI protected outlet. If your outdoor receptacle is not GFCI protected, have one installed before use.
